Quilts for Veterans 2023

The Tooele Elks Lodge, in partnership with Tooele City officials, held their annual Veterans Day program on Saturday, Nov. 11 where Dugway Proving Ground’s Commander, Col. James P. Harwell was this year’s guest speaker.

The program took place at St. Marguerite Catholic Church. The day’s events began with a breakfast at 9 a.m., followed by the program at 11 a.m.

Harwell said there are around 18 million residents in the United States who have served in the military, or an equivalent of 7% of the population.

After the program, the Tooele County Quilt Guild handed out handmade blankets to 55 veterans. Members of the guild hope to eventually provide every veteran in Tooele County with a homemade quilt.

Grantsville City held a Veterans Day program in the truck bay of the Grantsville Fire station. Their program started with breakfast at 9 a.m. A silent auction continued through until 10:30. a.m. The program got underway at 10:30 a.m.

The program included a flag ceremony by the Grantsville City police and a bagpipe medley of US Armed Force Services songs. Following several musical performances the concluding speaker was Paul Cook.
